March 14, 2021 | Update: Fountain Off for Repair

A 3/20/2021 update on the Fountain at The Circle:

Friends and neighbors:

You may have noticed that the fountain has been off for several days. That’s because a member of our volunteer maintenance crew recently discovered a concerning noise coming from the pump that powers the fountain. As a result, we took the precaution of shutting it off so it could be evaluated.

After discussion with City of Berkeley staff, it’s been decided to install a new pump while the current one is removed and inspected. We are told it may take up to 2 weeks for the new pump to arrive, and then it will need to be installed. This means the fountain will be off during that time.

We will drain the fountain this weekend, which will allow us to make a thorough evaluation of the entire fountain, including the main pool and the center basins. The fountain was installed in 1996, so has been hard at work almost every day for nearly 25 years now. A thorough inspection will let us evaluate some minor cracks in the concrete and any other issues that might not be visible when the fountain is full.

We hope that taking these actions will ensure the fountain is in shape to run smoothly for at least another 25 years. We will report back on things as they progress.

In the meantime, here are a few videos of the fountain to view until it is back online.

Previous post:

The Fountain at The Circle had to be shut off on Mar. 13 after a member of our volunteer maintenance crew discovered an issue with the fountain’s main pump. We have asked the city to investigate. We hope the issue can be resolved quickly and the fountain turned back on soon. We’ll update you as soon as we can.

Thanks.

Probably a good idea to leave it off until after St. Patrick’s Day, in case some misguided celebrant gets the brilliant idea of dumping green dye into it! Just a cautionary thought.Thanks.
