Friends and neighbors:

We are pleased and excited to announce that our history presentation at the main branch of the Berkeley Public Library this coming Saturday will feature the first public showing of a brand new documentary film.

The film, simply titled “The Fountain at The Circle,” presents the history of the two fountains that have flowed at the intersection of Marin and Arlington avenues: one erected in 1911 and destroyed in a crash in 1957, and today’s fountain, installed through the efforts of a group of neighbors and now celebrating the 30th anniversary of its dedication in 1996.

The 24-minute film was made by Berkeley freelance writer, filmmaker and historian Barbara Zuber Goldstein. Barbara has a Ph.D. in history from the University of Vienna and has been a writer and historical consultant for several award-winning feature movies.

The free, hour-long program at the library, 2090 Kittredge St., will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 18, in the library’s second-floor Mystery Room. In the adjoining lobby area, more about the history of the fountain and Fountain Walk is on view in three three display cases through Aug. 1. Among the items is a full-size plaster model of one of the fountain’s signature grizzly bear cubs.

More information about the main library’s hours can be found here.
